Longtime wars about control of time space continuum threatens Lords of Time source of immortality. To stop destruction of time itself, they created a sacred place – The time arena. There they fight and summon ghosts of powerful warriors though time and space – Since ancient history to galaxies far far away. Only the one, who can control time and destroys enemy’s totem will be allowed to get access to time source and immortality.
In the Time arena game players become one of the Lords of Time. In a given time you try to destroy enemy’s totem and defend yours.
The game designated to 2 to 4 Lords of Time in an age of 10 and one fight takes about 10 minutes. I think the game is meant to 2 players, in four you’ll be playing team based.
What you’ll find in the box
In the box will be double-sided game plan representing the time arena, 4 pairs of colorful time gates, by them ghosts enter the arena. The gates color match with hourglass, that show the time when you can summon new fighter. There are 12 fighters in 4 colors. To know which faction they represents there are cardboard rings. Game components are completed by 2 dice, energy tokens and one token of gearwheel and of course by rules.
What you’ll need and is not in the box is something to time rounds of players, for which you can use free app for your smartphone or chess clock.
How is it played?
There are 3 kinds of rules – for the first game, normal game and for the experts. In the variant for the first game you got recommended characters for both teams and you play without special abilities of fighters. In the full version you can pick your team and fighters get their abilities. The expert game is played on the second side of game plan and adds a new victory condition.
The game plan is made as chessboard, in the ends are totems of players. Every totem has 6 energy points, if the energy counter hits zero the player lost. Every player has 5 minutes to destroy enemy’s token and if he runs out of time first he loses as well.
Team of each player is made of 4 fighters. Defined by colour. Every fighter has their own characteristic – movement. Attack and defend number and their own special ability. Player’s color corresponds with time gate and hourglass. In the game plan you can see portals, through them fighters enter the arena.
Player can activate any number of his warriors (at least one) and make some following actions:
Summons him – If the warriors are available i.e. sand in hourglass has made it’s way, player can place him on any player’s portals in the game plan.
Movement – Character can move in any direction orthogonally or diagonally.
Fight – If the character has in their range an enemy, he can attack. Rolls a die and add this number to his attack number. If this number is higher than enemy’s defending number, then enemy is dead. Dead enemy’s miniature is returned to his time gate and hourglass is turned. When sand settles the warriors can be sent back to the arena. Each hourglass is different i.e. the time of unavailabity of warriors is different with each fighter.
Or you can attack enemy’s totem. It happens the same, if you have your warrior in range of the totem than you can attack it, for every successful attack totem loses energy. If the totem hits zero, who owns the totem loses.
When player activates all character he wants, he clicks in the app and the time is running for his opponent.
Some warriors have some special abilities as marksman that has bigger range or swordsman, that can make counter attack ( this ability has totem too ). There is a bomb that destroy everything in its range. Or there are characters that have some kind of protection or recharging back the totem.
The variant for experts allows to block opponent’s portal. If he loses all his portal he can’t receive reinforcements and loses when he has no warriors on the game plan left.
I like the game’s idea of real-time use. It requires a quick decision making and reactions. The chance is there represented by dice. Rules are simple and quick to learn, the game itself is quick as well, round can take even few seconds. Because the game is so quick you are not worried of losing because you can always return it in the rematch.
