It’s a mess! It is as if all the poodles of the world have gathered in one place: in the park, where I go to walk my dog every day. Dogs run fast back and forth, once you see them from the front, other times from the back. Finding one particular pet in such chaos is simply impossible! Or is it?
Your track of running dogs will be thoroughly tested by the Polly Poodle card game created by designer Jean-Francois Rochas. Illustrations were made by Oliver Freudenreich. The small yellow box was released by HABA, which brought it to market in 2019. From the bottom, players remove two sets of cards – portraits of 25 dogs, once from the front and once from the back. Players spread out the view of their backs on the table five times five cards. The other half of the cards is shuffled and create a deck. Each participant then chooses one wooden block.
When the game begins, the starting player turns the top card of the shuffled deck. This is a portrait of a dog, that his owner gave to players. Their job now is to find the right one between their buttocks. They can use tail, color and ear as clues. Some dogs are really similar. Once a player thinks he has found the right dog, he puts his cube on it.
Before the round is over, everyone else can agree or disagree with the player’s choice. They simply each place their cubes on the same or on another portrait. Opponents turn all selected cards and check, if any of the answers are correct. Author of that answer gets that card. Otherwise nothing happens and another round follows. Once players have broken down all twenty-five dogs, the winner is determined by who has collected how many barkers.
Polly Pudel is a game, in which players must prove their correct guess. It is the exact eye and speed in recognizing the right picture. Only one who first identifies a dog and attracts him to his bone can celebrate victory.
So it is clear, that the news is mainly aimed at children, who may have difficulties with these tasks. It becomes less difficult with age or experience. Therefore, the audience is clearly restricted to pre-school children (around five years) up to some seven years. Here, the game is celebrating the greatest success, while older players like to measure their strength with younger opponents, but it is not it anymore. And this also applies to adults.
But the game offers one crucial element – the ability to correct an opponent. It is not therefore about being the fastest, but being the author of right answer. If the player is wrong, then his opponents can get a point at his expense, but the mistake itself is not punished. So it is purely a risk and maybe a profit.
The games are lightning fast. Individual rounds last for half a minute, so even with possible mistakes (such cards will be repeated later) it is easy to fit in fifteen minutes. Children are always involved in this, so nobody gets bored and everything goes forward.
The simplicity of the game means no harm, because the children will appreciate it. Especially it is the creativity, because finding a dog by its background image is funny. Of course, illustrations are also important, which are excellent and clear – there is always only one solution.
Polly Pudel is a game, that tests the little ones and their ability to recognize the right details in the pictures. Only according to them, it is possible to recognize the right dog, which consists of ears, tail and color. Children must be attentive and quick. And this is the simplicity of playing with kids, which is also the case in Polly Pudel game.
Polly Poodle is a great little children‘s game. Between the spread dog buttocks, players have to find the right combination according to similarity in several features. The game is very nice, it also looks very nice and is especially fun for kids. Although they will grow out of it, because for the older, the search for a few minor elements is no longer a challenge. But it does not matter. Polly Pudel fulfills its mission well.
