Review: Guess What! – three of the nine

Detective work has always attracted me. They all appear to have the same job and must uncover things, that have some connection between them. But before them, there had to be someone, who joined these things togehter and gave them a common meaning. Usually, it is the perpetrator of a crime. But it is actually a profession, only not as popular as the other one. Although, we may argue even about that in some cases..

Players will this time be able to experience both sides of the battlefield thanks to the game created by and with illustrations by . This is a novelty for the year from stables Blue Orange and it was presented at the in Essen.

Small wine-colored box square is full of clouds. They show various possible combinations of images, that can be connected to a common meanings. To do this, players will use one common game board with nine fields and coordinates indicating letters A, B, C and 1, 2, 3 each. There are also rules, but core components are hidden in the hollow space beneath it all.

Three holes contain a stack of small square of thin cardboard cards. There are a total of 110 of them and each piece contains one item, whether it is a lock, sun or disco ball. But there is also one large compartment and inside have shelter four scoring boards. Each wears a fixed four swivel counters – three of them are numerical and each belongs to different column: A, B or C. Last rotating element provides a scale from zero to twelve points.

At the beginning of the game, players each get one scoring plate and together place game board in the middle. All cards with pictures are properly shuffled and placed aside. Starting player then takes top nine of them and spreads them randomly on a common game plan. Each object now has its coordinates ranging from A1 to C3.

Challenge for the active player (the one, that unfolded cards) is to find three pictures among nine, that have something in common. It can be anything, that is conveyable to others with words, sound or song. He has exactly one minute to do his choice and other players have to measure it on their own (hourglass is not in the box). After he mades that decision, he marks the three coordinates to corresponding tiles on his scoring board. Only then can announce chosen word to opponents, whether its a sentence or anything else.

Task for all other players is to guess correctly all three pictures. Only a complete success counts and two of the three images is simply not enough to score a point. But anyone, who manages to accomplish this task fully and guesses all picutres, receives one point. On the other side, active player gets point for each rival, who has chosen correct answers based on his hint.

After every round, active player role switches forwards. Game continues until someone reaches target number of twelve points. Duel ends immediately and person, who has reached specified number is the winner.

Guess What! is a game, that is riding on the success of narrative games. This time, there is a choice of nine pictures, but describing things is always training only one of the participants. There are usually more options to choose from each round, but sometimes it is not easy to search for a connection between active plates. Players need a good imagination, quick orientation and clear thinking.

There is in total enough cards in the box, although set of nine images is used for every round. Even when they start to repeat, they come in different combinations, so the game has actually pretty decent stamina. Yet, from time to time (with more time), you begin to impinge on the combinations, you have already found sometimes in the past. And this is, where the game starts to lose a little breath, but never enough to be boring or dull.

This situation is fortunately still far away. And until then, players can enjoy not only the classic version, but also those further described in the rules. Most interesting seems to us competition in finding the right combination at the same time. According to speed, points are then split, but also slower players will not leave completely empty handed.

Due to the gaming system, it is clear, that for the full experience, there should be at least three players present. And believe us, game is best with four. Cards offer does not increase, but tension and desire to be the fastest, does. Game does not force participants to derive complex abstract entity, as goes for Dixit. This time, you have to be honest, because your goal is to target as many players as possible (if you do not use Dixit-ousc rules). Thanks to this, rounds are also very fast and full twelve points are not reached in unnecessarily long time.

Player connecting three images has on one side a tough role, but also advantage, that he is compensated by possible point gain. If he finds a good combo, he can easily get two or three points. This is a distinct advantage against classical single-point income, when being in the role of a guesser. Therefore, it is important to observe equitable distribution of roles and rotate them regularly after each round. It would even be better to end the match only after everyone had opportunity to play their part narrative for same number of times. Otherwise (as described in the rules), the game may be unfair and winner can be player, who does not deserve it.

Guess What! offers plenty of new things to be interested in. Picking three of the nine cards, which refers to the same word, is definitely entertaining. But a lot depends on the players themselves. Overall, however, this is an interesting and a good game. Guess What! is a nice word and picture game, which will surely amuse all those happy storytellers.

Final word
Guess What! is a game, in which players must use one word to describe three cards. Nor two, nor four. But they always have more to choose from. And they must do it so skillfully, that others are able to identify them. Only in this way, they receive points for correct help. Game is full of betting, but although there is enough cards and pictures, chances are high, that combinations begin to repeat over time. That does not change the fact, that Guess What! is great fun for family evenings and on top of that in successful processing as well.
