I was very happy about my spoils. When I got to safety, I was tired. But when I woke up, the prey was gone. But not forever. I certainly remember hiding treasure somewhere, but I can’t remember, where in the whole world. This can not be happening.
All we have to do is train our memory, so that nothing like that happens to us. The new game, Fridos Beute, which designer Benjamin Schwer prepared for all playful children with illustrations by Anne Heidsieck, will be a great help in the dark of our memory. The result was published by HABA with the stamp of year 2018.
Inside a yellow box with a raccoon on the lid, players will see sixteen treasure cards, that have to be spread out in a circle. He then places raccoon figure on random card. In the middle remains a place for a pile of fifty diamonds.
The active player gets a die in hand and moves the figure by the corresponding spaces according to the resulting number of dots. It is here, that the player reveals the card on the last point of the move, where character’s walk ends. From then on, the player is allowed to turn from one to three other cards of his choice. In doing so, he tries to find the same kind of treasure, he has just discovered. If he succeeds, he can continue with another card, giving him more profit or settle for his current profit. Two treasures have the value of one diamond, three already bring three diamonds and four identical cards even correspond to six precious stones.
But if a player is wrong, his turn ends immediately, all the cards are turned back to secrecy and the player will not get anything for his turn. Instead, another player gets his chance to act. He can use the knowledge collected during the opponent’s unsuccessful turn. So the game continues with occasional gaining of precious stones until one of the participants accumulates thirteen diamonds. He becomes the winner instantly.
Fridos Beute is a memory game, in which players, who are not afraid to risk, can also succeed. With good luck, it is actually possible to win in two rounds. But the chance for this happening is really small and it always pays to collect more information before proceeding with taking chances.
An important element of every game and success is the already mentioned memory. Players learn from their own and opponents‘ mistakes, but the cards do not disappear from the circle. So it is possible to use sets again and again. But the die and the raccoon figure, that moves randomly, have something to say to freedom of selection. Thanks to this, the influence of luck is absolutely essential – players can have a great advantage, if they have luck.
Clever combination of two elements means a fun game for all younger players. The main role is the memory, that preschoolers are sure to show. They need numbers just to move the piece, and with them, one of the older teammates or the adult can help. But children will also learn a bit of restraint in addition to the counting and memory, because the risk is usually not worth it.
The game is fast and never lasts longer, than a quarter of an hour. In terms of the chances of individual participants, it is better to play with fewer opponents, but this is not so crucial information, considering the target audience.
Fridos Beute is a neat memory fun for kids, but at the same time, it brings happiness to the game. It is not about dice rolls, although it also has its important place in the game. Overall, however, Fridos Beute is a very nice children’s game, which adults like to sit down and measure their memory strength with their offspring.
Fridos Beute is a beautiful looking treasure hunt game. Players will need very good memory. But because there are not so many cards in the ring, there is one more catch. To be faster than others in collecting gems, the winner must also be able to risk and have a good dose of luck. Only then can he finally win. But whatever the result, Fridos Beute will be enjoyed by everyone.
