Review: Everdell Spirecrest – an adventure beyond the seven mountains

Far behind the tranquil hills and woods surrounding lies a place that hides mythical treasures and unprecedented adventures. And despite the fact that there is a risk of encountering giants, bears or wolves, the brave creatures are rabbit travelers representing individual animal clans. Their expedition will be recorded in the chronicles of all clans and will not be forgotten whether they return or not.

Such unexpected adventures await players in the expansion, which comes with the popular board game Everdell. Its design is signed by , and the graphics were taken care of by . The game is, of course, produced by and is currently running in Europe under the banner of .

The box shows a group of heroic hares descending a snowy mountain in a blizzard. Inside is a large map that describes the path to adventure. As part of the classic preparation, players lay this board aside and place one adventurer in the color of their nation at the top left of the trail.

But this is just the beginning of the preparation of the board. Players also need to fill its area with pieces of large creatures and also place map tiles on the way. Each of the participants will also receive one piece of the map of Everdell to mark the beginning of their expedition. There is also a place for weather cards for each of the four seasons, which the players place in the prepared positions and the first one (winter) reveals. In the same way, survey cards, which are of three different types, have different reservations – they are different for paths, peaks and ridges.

As part of the classic Everdell game, players will spread out a selection of eight cards under a large cardboard tree. Each will then receive their own starting set of random cards and only two of the possible six pieces of the selected animal nation. Event boards and forest cards are arranged along the plan to determine the available events. With the help of animals, they get raw materials from the bank from here, and with their use, they can then unload the cards of creatures and buildings. Each building is then paired with a resident, where ownership of one player guarantees free unloading of the other. The cards themselves have different colors and effects. Gradually, the participants expand the ranks of their workers, progress through the seasons and try to collect victory points. At the end, the players compare their scores and find the winner.

The whole game of Everdell is marked by the preparation of the entire expedition. Whenever a player chooses to prepare for the next season as part of his turn instead of playing cards, his attention will momentarily turn to a new map. He can choose any tile from the area where his traveler is located and then he can choose from three cards from that area. He pays a possible price in the cards from his hand and places a new catch next to his city, because he can give him some lasting effect or get one of the big animals under his control. Finally, the player moves the traveler’s piece to the next area.

However, the game is also affected by weather cards. The player must abide by the terms of the card where his traveler is currently located. During the whole fight, the weather will change several times for each of the participants. At the same time, they plan their adventures with the tiles, which will occur only at the end of the entire fight. Once one of the players is at the end of the last act, they can choose to travel. Gradually, they can use all three pieces of the map, but they have to pay their price and then collect the victory points. You add them to your score.

Spirecrest is an adventurous expansion, but you don’t have to worry about it losing the tactics of the game. Players continue to have a foundation in planning and working well with cards. Although the new board tells the story of courage, it still only adds new cards or point bonuses to players.

He adds such an inconspicuous mini-game to the whole game between seasons. At that moment, thanks to the travel of his envoy, the player can choose a new ability from the three cards that his traveler discovered on his quest. These are valuable additions to each village, but they are very significantly balanced by the weather effect. This affects the player in each turn and changes as their rabbit figures move forward on the adventure board.

The new expansion surprisingly adds a lot to the game, especially in terms of the overall experience. It all makes sense, but at the same time it fits beautifully into the philosophy of the basic game. It’s one of those expansions that flows into the game as if it belonged there from the beginning.

A big attraction are the new figures of large animal creatures, which will replace one of their workers for the players and offer something extra.

Due to the complexity of Spirecrest, the rules recommend that you do not use additional boxes when playing with this expansion and only enjoy the game in combination with this one exploration experience. However, although the complexity increases, because the phases take place only a few times in the whole game, it practically does not affect the final time. But the experience itself is very much supported.

Graphics and processing remains at an excellent level. Everdell also scores in family circles thanks to his fairytale impression. And on the lid, you will feel as if you were climbing Mount Caradhras with Gandalf.

Everdell: Spirecrest is an extension that is an absolute must for every Everdell fan. It wonderfully enriches the overall experience without adding any unnecessary new rules. Everdell: Spirecrest is an absolutely precise extension, the qualities of which are not in doubt.
